Last Friday evening, 39 Junior School students and 7 staff members left the DCSPD campus and made their way to Pudong airport to participate in this year’s mammoth Dulwich College Games Competition, taking us to Myanmar and the Dulwich College Yangon Campuses.
The children (in Years 4 through 6) endured a long journey, eventually arriving in Myanmar on Saturday morning.
Ahead of them were two days of tough competition against seven other Dulwich Colleges, including Singapore, Beijing, Suzhou, and DCS Puxi. This sporting battle took them to the pool, the running track, the basketball court and the football pitch, with the DCSPD Shanghai team endeavouring to achieve personal and College gold!
Session by session, we saw the children develop in skill and confidence, matched by a committed and genuine team spirit which grew with each day of the trip.
Playing in 38°C heat, and having travelled through Friday night, the challenge of competing was tough and our DCSPD competitors had to show real grit and resilience to overcome their fatigue and perform to their best. They did this through commitment, empathy, and kindness, looking after each other when things got tough.
We competed well in football, despite hot conditions that tested our students’ resilience. They showed grit and determination and produced some really good team performances.
DCSPD had some amazing results in basketball, including an overtime win which resulted in a very exciting free throw shoot out and our U/11 Girls Team 1 winning the Bowl Final. The U/10 Boys Team 1 then went undefeated to win the Cup Championship. The U/9 Boys were unlucky to finish third in basketball but showed some excellent skills in the process.
Every child in the 39-strong squad achieved a medal, with a total scoop of 158 bronze, silver, and gold medals in the athletics and swimming competitions.
For the staff involved in the trip, however, its success was not measured by medals alone, but rather by the way in which every child showed the Dulwich D’s: drive, dedication, and determinationto do the very best that they could, as an individualandfor their team.
The confidence, compassion, and comradery exhibited by the children in our team made us extremely proud. Well done to all of you!
My sincere thanks as well to the six Junior School staff who helped create such wonderful team spirit, and who supported the children throughout. We could not deliver experiences such as this one without your dedication and commitment!
