π Day
March 14th
G1-4
As an essential subject, mathematics plays an important role in a child’s life. From primary school to college, math has accompanied almost every child's educational career. It is the Math Week from 11th March to 15th March, and the day, 14th March is designated as π Day since the date is linked to the π.

“π Challenge”, “Math Themed Handbags Design”, “Math Carnival”, a series of math-related activities and games were carried out in each grade which immerse the students in the joy of mathematics learning this week.

On 14th March, teachers and children wore costumes with numbers, and each grade also prepared various of activities to celebrate π Day. The first grade teachers gave each student in the class a quarter of a circle to decorate on their own. They put the quarters all together to make this stunning class or hallway collage. The teachers in second grade hid ten interesting math problems outdoor, the children worked in groups to find and completed together. The Math Carnival in third grade is, Dominoes, Chinese Sliding Blocks and Memory Power Game. They enjoyed these competitions very much. The children of the fourth grade started the "π challenge" finals early in the morning, and the students worked in groups in the afternoon who got an envelope and went outdoors to find various mathematical symbols and graphics according to the questions or instructions in the letter.

The π Day is aimed to stimulate students’ interest in learning mathematics. We hope that every student can truly discover the infinite mystery of mathematics, be willing to explore mathematics, fall in love with mathematics, and apply mathematics in their daily life!

“Ring—!” The students swarmed in like a pack of bees, running and yelling. What was happening? Something exciting, happy, and fun—the Math Bazaar!

“We are going to have a Math Bazaar, where all of you are going to sell things. Use discounts, activities, or whatever you can do, to attract people to come buy your things,” the math teacher explained. After hearing that announcement, the students were buzzing with excitement.

Before the Math Bazaar officially began, students started to tear off the packages of their food, stationary, or whatever items they were going to sell. Advertisements had already begun a day before, and students were determined to be the one who made the most money. This Math Bazaar would be helpful for learning how to sell things in the future. It would also help provide money to donate to charity.

“Come and buy our things! It’s very cheap!” All types of voices mixed together, advertising for their own stand. Break time made the classrooms even more crowded. People from other blocks and classes all came to buy things.
It was definitely a great lesson and experience for the students. The Math Bazaar was a great success, and it was fantastic.

What is pi (π)? Pi is a tool for communicating and rejoicing in mathematics. It represents not only a math constant close to 3.14 but also every SHSIDer’s passion toward exploring the beauty of math. On 14 March 2019 (3.14) students celebrated this number.

During the first CAS period, students of grades seven and eight watched fun math videos in homerooms. These videos displayed ingenious application of math on daily lives and interesting math problems. To some students, regular math classes may have arid circumstances, but this special “math lesson” was able to grab all students’ attention and convey the fun knowledge to them. Some topics included Schrodinger’s Cat, Fibonacci Sequence, and infinity.

Then came the more exciting second CAS period. Every seventh or eighth grade homeroom had a math-related activity that encouraged students to use their math skills to solve the problems. All the rooms were crowded with intelligent young mathematicians, competing against each other to extract the essence of the problems. Some activities were 24-point calculation, Sudoku, board games, π decimal-recitation, and Crazy Math problem-solving. The picture full of love to math was magnificent and luxuriant.

Time passed quickly, and many students complained about the short duration of the mirthful time. Looking at the stamps on the pi-day passport, batches of memories flowed by students’ minds. It is an unforgettable day of math!

什么是pi(π)圓周率?
Pudong Campus
From March 11th to March 15th, our Pudong students celebrated the remarkable Math Week. In this week, a variety of math fantastic activities and games were carried out. Our lower graders enjoyed their math activities such as Pi Word Challenge, Scavenger Hunt, Sudoku, while upper graders focused on more challenging events, like Presentations of Mathematicians and Bag/T-shirt Design of Pi Elements.

The most exciting part in this week was the Pi Day. It is well known that Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th around the world. Pi is the symbol used in mathematics to represent the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14. On the afternoon of March 14th, all of our Pudong students took part in the Pi Day Carnival with great enthusiasm. Students celebrated this day by dressing up as mathematicians creatively and went around to experience different math events. People enjoyed a game called “Where is the Time” in Class1-1, which required a candidate to find numbers related to the clock time in classroom. Some of our students chose to play Math Board Game and Tangram in Class2-1 and Class2-2. Games such as Rounding Bingo in Class 4-2 required participants to calculate intensively in seconds. Admittedly the atmosphere was tense when the competition began, however, all students tried every effort to get higher scores and win more medals.

Although the Math Week comes to the end, Pi Day is a wonderful opportunity for our little math enthusiasts to understand more math concepts, experience the glamor of math and challenge themselves. Hopefully they will continuously play more math games, learn more about math and practice more in the future!
