Grade 9-12 | Pi-Day
Again we arrive at March 14, 2019, the renowned Pi Day. The math teachers began action early—from math raps and math videos that begun several weeks ago, to the “Beauty of Math” art exhibition set up in the lobby lately, and to the difficult questions and the number cards everywhere in the hallways, Pi Day has an abundant variety of activities that stimulates students’ interest.

But the most anticipated activity is probably the Math Knockout competition that began noon March 14. As the questions on the lobby screen scrolled past, the contestants quickly pressed their calculators and wrote down the answers; the audience discussed the questions on the board enthusiastically. The first team to finish calculations quickly slid the paper with the answer on it into the answer box, and the other team followed shortly after. As the host announced the answer, the correct team cheered in celebration, and the other tensed in preparation for the next question.

This particular activity is the courtesy of all the math teachers and the student organization STEM Doge Daily. Its purpose is to motivate students’ passion and understanding of math. As an activity involving many grades, Math Knockout will continue until the end of April, when the final winners of each grade will be determined. Student Frank Linfrom 11(1A) comments: “Initially, I just took part in these activities with the feeling of trying. The processes of discussing, applying and solving math puzzles were so exciting and interesting.”

Teachers approve of the activity too. Teacher Ella Gao comments: “There’s no doubt that the charm of Math is everywhere in our lives! This Pi day is a great way to introduce a seemingly complicated mathematical concept to students who are not interested in Math. Now that Pi Day is becoming a school tradition, We hope all the students enjoyed their time playing with mathematics!”

This activity was very successful, stimulating students’ participation and interest. Let us continue to anticipate the following competitions!Written by 11(1B) Lily Peng
