We hear you have some varied interests that people wouldn’t normally think go together. Can you tell us about these?
One of my main interests is music. My extracurriculars are full of APAC Choir, AMIS Choir, Noteworthy, Tri-M. Yet, in terms of future studies, my interests are more geared to STEM-related fields. Computer science, calculus, physics—all very different compared to music. Additionally, outside of school, I rock climb. Since 6th grade, I have been training and competing in this sport and it, too, is one of my passions.
What do these different interests each add to your life?
They kind of aid as a bit of a distraction from school, but as a good distraction. Instead of constantly focusing on my studies, when I am in the climbing gym, I can just turn my attention to finishing a route. Or, if I am rehearsing for a performance, I can just get lost in the music. They’ve also helped me get to know other people who share my passions, and I love meeting others who inspire me to continue doing what I do.
Does one, in any way, impact the other, or are they very separate uses of your energy?
They’re all quite different. Rock climbing definitely uses more physical energy, while when I am focusing on science or math, it is more challenging for my mind. Singing, however, is a combination of both, as it actually takes a lot of mental effort to make sure you’re singing the right notes and lyrics, as well as staying in time with everyone else.
What do you think might be some benefits of being a multi-faceted person?
I feel like it lets me have more experiences in different aspects of life. Instead of putting all my time and effort to achieving one thing, I can split up my time to doing many different activities. I think this also keeps things interesting because there’s always more to learn and accomplish.
If you were limited, and could only do one, how do you think this would change you as a person?
Honestly, I get bored pretty easily, so if I were limited to only doing one activity, I would probably get tired of it quickly and lose my interest. However, I guess it would also let me put more time into that one activity so I would be able to excel at it.
