We hear you have some varied interests that people wouldn’t normally think go together. Can you tell us about these?

我們聽說你擁有一些人們通常認(rèn)為不屬于同一類的興趣愛好。你能跟我們講講嗎？

I started riding horses when I was 5 and haven't looked back since. Immediately I found a connection in riding that I wasn't able to find in other sports, and horses soon became a huge part of my life. Even moving here, I had to keep riding. Toby, this crazy young horse, has completely changed my life here in Shanghai, and is truly my rock. Additionally, in 8th grade I met a best friend, with whom I started a small apparel brand called Hart Outfitters, which has been growing ever since.

我五歲的時(shí)候開始學(xué)騎馬，從此一發(fā)不可收拾。與其他運(yùn)動(dòng)項(xiàng)目不同的是，我立即喜愛上了騎馬這項(xiàng)運(yùn)動(dòng)，騎馬很快也成為了我生命中不可或缺的一部分。即便是來到這里以后，我還是堅(jiān)持騎馬。Toby這匹瘋狂的小馬完全改變了我在上海的生活，是我的樂趣來源。此外，我在八年級(jí)結(jié)識(shí)了我最好的朋友，我們兩人推出了一個(gè)名為Hart Outfitters的服裝品牌，這個(gè)品牌一直在不斷發(fā)展壯大。

In 10th grade, branching out, I also decided to join the rugby program at SAS, finding a strong love in that sport as well. The team atmosphere was unlike anything I have ever experienced.

十年級(jí)的時(shí)候，我還加入了上海美國學(xué)校的橄欖球項(xiàng)目，同樣深深愛上了這項(xiàng)運(yùn)動(dòng)。橄欖球隊(duì)的團(tuán)隊(duì)氛圍是我從未體驗(yàn)過的。

What do these different interests each add to your life?

這些不同的興趣愛好為你的生活增添了什么？

Riding has added so much to my life, I don't even know where to begin. It's my home, my safe place, and, I believe, has taught me more perseverance than anything else could ever have taught me. Rugby has taught me the importance of teamwork and support more than any other team I have ever been a part of. Hart Outfitters, has brought together everything I have learned from academics and life. As co-founder, I have learned so much about fabrics, design, distribution and analytics, as well as how to manage deadlines, and communicate around problems that arise.

騎馬為我的生活增色不少，我甚至不知道從何說起。騎馬是我的港灣，比起其他事情騎馬讓我學(xué)會(huì)了堅(jiān)持不懈。橄欖球比我加入的任何球隊(duì)都更能讓我認(rèn)識(shí)到團(tuán)隊(duì)合作的重要性。Hart Outfitters整合了我在學(xué)習(xí)和生活中學(xué)到的一切。作為聯(lián)合創(chuàng)始人，我學(xué)到了關(guān)于織物、設(shè)計(jì)、分銷和分析的很多知識(shí)，學(xué)會(huì)了如何對(duì)截止日期進(jìn)行管理，如何針對(duì)出現(xiàn)的問題進(jìn)行溝通。

Do you ever feel pressure to choose between them and just have one thing you love? If so, where does that pressure come from?

你有沒有感到多選一的壓力，有沒有想過只選擇一個(gè)興趣愛好？如果是的話，這種壓力來自哪里？

Never. I sat in my counselor’s office last year wondering how I was going to fit all of these passions into my schedule. Could I actually do this? Should I be doing this? I realized that no matter what, I was going to do what I loved and I would make time for these things. Riding will always be my first priority when it comes to after school activities, and everything else will follow suit. I would say that the most pressure comes from my parents worrying that I've pushed myself too hard for too long, but I'm so thankful for them being there to support me if I ever do feel this way. To be honest, I feel like choosing would only limit me, and that is the last thing I want to do. I'm a huge believer in choice and that choice is one of the main things I want out of life when I'm older: the ability to choose to do or not do something and be completely okay with that choice, no regrets or resentment.

從未有過。去年，我坐在輔導(dǎo)員辦公室里，心想，我如何將所有這些興趣愛好融入到我的日程安排中？我真的能夠做到嗎？我應(yīng)該這樣做嗎？我意識(shí)到，無論如何，我都要做我喜歡做的事情并為此擠出時(shí)間。騎馬是我課外活動(dòng)的重中之重，其他興趣愛好緊隨其后。在我看來，最大的壓力來自我父母，他們擔(dān)心我對(duì)自己要求太高，但我感謝他們一直以來的支持。說實(shí)話，我認(rèn)為多選一只會(huì)限制我的發(fā)展，而這是我最不愿意看到的。我非常推崇選擇權(quán)，這種選擇權(quán)是我未來最想要的：能夠選擇做什么，不做什么，不留任何遺憾。

What do you think might be some benefits to being a multi-faceted person?

你認(rèn)為成為一位“多面手”的好處有哪些？

I think some of the major benefits are the lessons you learn and easily apply to other parts of your life, as well as the ways it essentially forces you to become a time managing professional. Also, it teaches you to truly follow your passion(s), for if there is something that is a part of your life while you are trying to balance many other things, you will soon realize if it truly matters to you or not, based on your drive to continue working hard on whatever it may be.

我認(rèn)為主要的好處是能夠?qū)W到很多知識(shí)并運(yùn)用到生活的其他方面，并且能夠迫使自己對(duì)時(shí)間進(jìn)行管理。此外，這還能夠讓你真正追求自己的興趣愛好，因?yàn)樵谀銍L試平衡其他很多事情的時(shí)候，在你為之付出努力的過程中，你很快會(huì)意識(shí)到這一興趣愛好對(duì)你來說是否真的重要

If you were limited, and could only do one, how do you think this would change you as a person?

如果你只能選擇一個(gè)興趣愛好的話，你認(rèn)為這會(huì)對(duì)你產(chǎn)生什么影響？

Without a doubt, I would definitely say that if I had to limit myself to only do one thing, I would be a completely different person. There are so many lessons I would not be able to learn or apply within my life, opportunities that I might miss, and experiences I would not be able to have. This reminds me of how recently, my partner and I were featured in an editorial within the Plaid Horse Magazine and given the opportunity to be guests on their series of podcasts, the Plaidcast. Due to the time difference, this meant staying up until 3am for the interview. We were so honored to have been asked and I realize we would not have had this experience without all the dedication and hard work we have not only put into Hart Outfitters, but every other area of our lives.

毫無疑問，如果我只能選擇一個(gè)興趣愛好的話，我將變得與現(xiàn)在完全不同。我將無法學(xué)到很多知識(shí)并運(yùn)用到我的生活中，我會(huì)錯(cuò)失很多機(jī)會(huì)，也會(huì)失去很多經(jīng)歷。這讓我想起了我和我的合伙人最近出現(xiàn)在了Plaid Horse Magazine的一篇社論中，有機(jī)會(huì)做客他們的Plaidcast播客系列。由于時(shí)差原因，這意味著熬夜到凌晨3點(diǎn)。我們非常榮幸能夠受邀做客他們的節(jié)目。我也意識(shí)到，如果我們沒有在Hart Outfitters以及我們生活的其他方面投入時(shí)間和精力的話，我們就不會(huì)有這樣的經(jīng)歷。
