Onthe morning of Feburary, G11 students at QDHS attended a workshop given by Lance King, the creator of the Art of Learning Program. During his visit, Mr. King introduced new learning concepts to students, such as “maximize effort” and “smart strategies”.
In In my opinion, the most important concept shared by Mr. King was that of "failing well," a concept that emphasizes learning through failure and focusing on “Resilience” and “Courage”. Imagine you're faced with the question “describe a time when you set a goal and didn’t achieve it. What was the cause of that? What did you do next?” During the workshop, I was asked to complete this question, and I filled in the first two blanks quickly, but got stuck on the third one.
This is how I realized that I’m "failing badly" instead of "failing well". The key features of?failing badly?included, blaming school/system, avoiding activities that could result in failure and avoid dealing with failure.

The lecture by Mr. King was truly inspirational. We have touched upon the approaches to learning, which he talked about popular topics among IB students such as?attention?and?time management. Because the massive amount of work in IB learning, how to manage our time and to focus on what we are doing is essential. “You can definitely do much more work when you are paying attention” Mr. King said. The skills that he taught us were simple but easily ignored. For example,?we should always open “study mode” on our phone.?Do we really have this “study mode” on our phones? How come we have never seen it before? “Please take your phone out and turn on airplane mode,” He smiled. We all laughed at once and understood that there are many things around us that we can utilize.
The most exciting part was learning how to juggle. I always wanted to learn how to juggle. I had tried several rounds at home before but failed to do so. “If you guys can follow my instructions, you can all know how to juggle in three steps.” He opened a small suitcase filled with juggling balls. The first step was to toss only one ball which was easy. Everybody in the classroom was able to do that. Then, add another ball into the process. Balls were dropping all over the classroom now. It was much more difficult for step two, but we could still handle it after several practicing rounds. However, when it came to juggling three balls at a time, we could not control where the ball was directed towards. The practice was not as successful as we thought, and nobody proved successful at juggling. “I have practiced nine hours of juggling. If you keep doing this for 9 hours after you are home, you will learn how to juggle just like me.” Mr. King said while tossing three balls in a smooth parabola orbit. Through experiencing the process of learning, we are testing out the unfamiliar theories and methods. I realized that?newly-learned concepts can always be applied in daily life, which undergoing a real-life situation can give us a better understanding of the content.
We have not previously heard similar lectures. We study all the time without knowing how to study, or how to make our learning process more efficient. This is what is happening on most of the students now. The lecture is innovative because it shows us the broader concept of learning. Applying these skills and methods to our studying process, enables us to finish more work in less time with better quality. These are extremely important for us IB students because they help us to manage our time correctly as well as to quickly adapt to the pace of learning. As Mr. King said, we have discussed the approaches of learning with other students who did not listen to the lecture. We sincerely hope that there will be more opportunities for more students about the ATLs which is beneficial in many ways.

A lesson with theories of life and being successful should have been exploited by the world——at least as I thought it was before. This lesson with Mr. King, however, was not very much so. The lesson is after all, very interesting and meaningful to the study life of a student. The activities are well-presented and every one is fulling involved in the games.
The idea of?living in the present?is thoughtful, it fits quite well with students in a sense of school life, the planning is interesting, the stories are inspiring. But I suppose that a student’s worst nightmare is the future, and hence some may struggle with depression. It is not only now that they worked and feared for, it is the future for most of times. That is why they (and sometimes I) choose to hide in another world. The relationship with others is what they yearned for, but they are also troubled by it, like a hedgehog protected as well as troubled by its thorns. I suppose what a young man (or women) should learn is how to face future. The truth is that?the future lies within the reality, and the reality starts from the end of daydreams.?We want guidance for living now as well as how to hope for the future. A passion is needed for that, but I know, somehow, we have lost our passion, thinking nothing of the future. We don’t need fortune telling and planning of our future, but a guidance of hope, to always be hopeful, because the former is nothing more than a slave of the past knowledge and experience.
A good lesson for success should not be ahead of students’ understanding, thus it may not lead; yet it should not fall behind, it may not follow; it should be combined with students’ life.
