We hear you have some varied interests that people wouldn’t normally think go together. Can you tell us about these?

My varied interests lay in robotics and Poi dance, which is this aboriginal dance from the Maori people, a tribe from New Zealand. Regarding robotics, I have participated in the FIRST Robotics Program since 7thgrade, and I am currently in the First Robotics Challenge (FRC) club. I also entered Intel ISEF with an engineering project, which I will be going to Finals with.My interest in Poi has led to performing at school events, and also at events outside of school.

我們聽說你擁有一些大家通常認為不屬于同一類的興趣愛好。你能跟我們講講嗎？

我的興趣愛好是研究機器人以及跳Poi舞。Poi舞是新西蘭毛利人跳的一種土著舞蹈。在機器人研究方面，我是從七年級開始一直參加FIRST Robotics項目，目前是First Robotics Challenge（FRC）社團的成員。我還參加了英特爾國際科學與工程大獎賽，并憑借一個工程項目進入決賽。出于對Poi舞的熱愛，我會在校內外的各種活動中進行表演。

What do these different interests each add to your life?

Robotics and Poi add to my life two opportunities to explore different styles of activities. Robotics is more academic, and hence requires more ‘brain power’ to problem solve issues and learn new skills. It needs a lot of thinking and understanding before certain knowledges can be used and applied. For Poi, however, it is slightly different as it is more akin to dance. Hence, the activity is more practice intensive, and requires you to just give it a few tries (or perhaps a few more) to succeed.

這些不同的興趣愛好為你的生活帶來了什么？

研究機器人和跳Poi舞為我提供了兩種機會，讓我能夠探索不同風格的活動。機器人研究更具學術性，因此需要消耗更多的“腦力”來解決問題，學習新技能。這需要進行很多思考和理解，才能對特定知識進行運用。Poi舞稍有不同，更像是跳舞。因此，poi舞更加注重實踐，只需嘗試幾次（或者是多嘗試幾次）便能取得成功

Does one, in any way, impact the other, or are they very separate uses of your energy?

In my opinion, robotics and an aboriginal art form from New Zealand are quite distant. Hence, they are different uses of my energy. Robotics is more sedentary, and Poi is a more active activity. As previously explained, these two different uses of energy add to my life precious opportunities to harness these two differing energies.

一個興趣愛好會不會對另一個興趣愛好產生影響？還是說它們之間互不影響？

在我看來，機器人研究和來自新西蘭的土著藝術之間差別很大。因此，這兩個興趣愛好消耗的是我不同的精力。機器人研究是相對靜態的活動，Poi舞則更加動態一些。正如我之前說的，通過兩種不同的方式消耗我的精力，為我提供了寶貴的機會，讓我能夠駕馭這兩種不同的精力。

Do you ever feel pressure to choose between them and just haveonething you love? If so, where does that pressure come from?

I definitely feel pressure to follow my academic STEM paths simply because they are paths that many people have followed.

你有沒有因為多選一的壓力而只選擇一個興趣愛好？如果有的話，這種壓力來自哪里？

我在學習方面會感到一些壓力，因為這是大多數人的選擇。

What do you think might be some benefits to being a multi-faceted person?

Strangely, being multi-faceted allows me to meet and makes friends with many different people. The friendships and connections I make through robotics, which is more STEM-orientated, are quite different to the friendships and connections I make through poi dance, which is more artistic. This makes me more open-minded and allows me sometimes to view problems through a different perspective.

你認為成為一位“多面手”的好處有哪些？

奇妙的是，成為一位“多面手”讓我能夠結交各種各樣的朋友。我在機器人研究方面建立的友誼和聯系更具學術性，我在Poi舞方面建立的友誼和聯系則更具藝術性，兩者迥然不同。這讓我思想更加開放，讓我有時候能夠從不同的角度看待問題。

If you were limited, and could only do one, how do you think this would change you as a person?

Feeling restricted is the first thing that pops into mind. There are so many things I wish to explore and being only able to do one would begin to make me wonder about the other interesting things about this world. My desire to explore and learn more would definitely distract me.

如果你只能選擇一個興趣愛好的話，你認為這會對你產生什么影響？

對于這個問題，我的第一感覺就是受到了限制。很多事情都是我想去探索的。只選擇一個興趣愛好會讓我對這個世界上其他有趣的事情感到好奇。我渴望探索和學習更多的東西，這肯定會分散我的注意力。
