Scholastic winner Iris Chen ’20 interviews a student for a writing piece.
Writers and artists at Shanghai American School abound. Thankfully, so do opportunities for them to express themselves.
We’re not just talking about the courses we offer, nor the world-class teachers, spaces, exhibitions, and visiting professionals that all represent ways we foster the creative spirits amongst us. Because we all know the truth is that the real work, the stubbornly sitting down each day to hone inspiration into a craft, this can only come from within the artist themselves. It is not a journeyfor the faint of heart.
"SAS students of all agesseize
opportunities to submit to writing contestsand let their work shine"
Within our school and the demands of growing up, we haveartists in our midst who continue to create amazing work. And we aren’t the only ones who think so. Year after year, SAS students of all ages seize opportunities to submit to writing contests and let their work shine. LittleStar’s Short Story Competition for China just revealed SAS winners in every age category, including First Prize for 16+ going to Carlos Lao ’19.
This year also brought out our writers and artists for the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, featuring 24 awards for SAS student writers and another 24 for student artists. Those winning a first place recognition then advanced to the global competition, and four writers, Richard Xue ’23, Iris Chen ’20, Nicole Li ’20, and Claire Lu ’20 moved on to become international winners.

LittleStar Winning Stories from past years
Still in middle school, Richard Xue ’23 has now won consecutivenational medalsin the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards (as a 7th and 8th grader respectively). “To me, writing has always helped me convey my emotions and beliefs,” he says. “Whether it’s through crafting a journalism piece and hinting at a perspective, or through creating a short story that reveals a certain theme, the use of pen and paper (or for my generation, keyboard and screen) helps make my voice heard. In my opinion, this is the most enjoyable part of writing.”
“To me, writing has always helped me
convey my emotions and beliefs”
We love supporting our young writers and artists as they grow and learn to make their words powerful and heard in the world. Onward, you voices of tomorrow. We are listening.
