The Next Big Thing 下一件大事: Henry Jin

Quick to smile and slow to toot his own horn, Henry Jin sometimes set aside his homework just to binge read a book from cover to cover. He also found a college, a dream school nonetheless, ready to embrace the ways he’s adept at following his genuine interest. Graduating from Shanghai American School’s Puxi campus this year, Henry Jin is then headed to Oxford College at Emory University.

Henry Jin經常面帶微笑，很少自吹自擂。他有時候會放下自己的作業，連續讀完一本書。與此同時，他也找到了自己理想中的，愿意接受他追隨自己興趣愛好的方式的大學。今年從上海美國學校浦西校區畢業后，Henry Jin將前往埃默里大學牛津學院就讀。

So tell us about your plans for next year.

跟我們講講你明年的計劃吧。

I’m going to Oxford College of Emory University. It’s in Oxford, Georgia, USA. I initially focused my college search on liberal arts colleges, but I discovered and became interested in Oxford College of Emory University. Oxford College is a two-year program at a separate campus, but is part of Emory University. The first two years of school will feel like a smallliberal arts school, with less than 1000 students. But I will get the best of a small school and a bigger school because I can use the resources of Emory University. And after two years at Oxford College I will move to the Atlanta campus of Emory.

我將前往埃默里大學牛津學院就讀。它位于美國佐治亞州牛津市。我最開始關注的大學全是博雅學院，但后來我知道了埃默里大學牛津學院并對其產生了興趣。牛津學院位于一個單獨的校區，但隸屬于埃默里大學，我將會在那里學習兩年。前兩年的學習會讓人感覺埃默里大學牛津學院是一個小型的博雅學院，學生人數不到1000人。但我既能受益于一個規模較小的學院，又能受益于一個規模較大的大學，因為我可以使用埃默里大學的資源。在埃默里大學牛津學院學習兩年后，我將轉到埃默里大學位于亞特蘭大的校區進行學習。

Can you explain why you choose a liberal arts education?

你能不能介紹一下你為什么選擇接受博雅教育？

The learning environment is kind of similar to what we have here at SAS. The number of students per class is lower than at big universities. There is more interaction between the professors and the students. That is something I know I am very comfortable with, and I want to keep that. The professors at Oxford College seemed very active and welcoming and responsive to student interest.

博雅學院的學習環境與我們在上海美國學校的學習環境類似。每個班級的學生人數低于規模較大的大學的學生人數。教授和學生之間可以進行更多互動。這是我非常喜歡的，我希望保持這種學習環境。埃默里大學牛津學院的教授看起來非常活躍熱情，他們能夠對學生的興趣做出回應。

As I said, larger universities have more resources, but in this case I can still take advantage of the facilities and abundant networking opportunities of Emory, which is a really well-connected university. I think they also have a very strong alumni network. From what I’ve researched this is a very unique opportunity.

正如我所言，規模較大的大學擁有更多資源，但對于我來說，我依舊能夠利用埃默里大學的設施以及豐富的社交機會，因為埃默里大學人脈很廣。我認為埃默里大學的校友網同樣很好。根據我的調查研究，這提供了非常獨特的機會。

It sounds like a really great place. How did you find it?

這聽起來很不錯。你是如何發現它的？

I was going to visit Emory, because it was one of the schools I was interested in. Actually you could say it was my dream school. And when I was there, I heard about their Oxford College.Emory stands out in that it challenges the applicants to present who they really are and what they are passionate about. I liked thaton the application the essay questions seemed structured to really get to know you better. Questions like, “what motivates you to learn?” I think I was able to present myself in a way that makes them understand I am a good fit for their values and ideas.

我本來就計劃參觀埃默里大學，因為它是我感興趣的大學之一。事實上，它可以說是我理想中的大學。在參觀的過程中，我聽說了他們的牛津學院。埃默里大學之所以能夠脫穎而出，是因為它鼓勵申請前來就讀的學生展示真實的自我和自己的興趣愛好。我感覺他們大學申請書上的問題都是為了更好地了解申請前來就讀的學生。問題包括“是什么激勵你不斷學習？”我認為這讓我能夠介紹自己，讓他們知道我認同他們的價值觀和理念。

So what motivates you to learn?

是什么激勵你不斷學習呢？

Usually I follow my genuine interests, from economics to literature. Sometimes I even put off school work to read. You learn so much from reading, and it allows you to absorb experience from other people. I love reading, and I also feel like it is very important for students to read outside of English classes.

通常情況下，我都是追隨自己真正的興趣愛好，從經濟學到文學。有時候，我甚至會放下手上的作業去讀書。讀書能夠讓我學到很多，能夠讓我汲取其他人的經驗教訓。我喜歡閱讀，我認為學生應當在英語課堂外繼續閱讀，這非常重要。

Is there an interest or subject that really grabbed you during your high school years?

高中階段有沒有什么興趣愛好或學科真正吸引了你的注意力？

The class that influenced me was AP Economics, and I feel like I can grasp this subject quite naturally. I am fascinated by the way different economies work, how businesses operate, and also how people are running the economy of a whole country.

AP經濟學對我產生了影響，我感覺自己能夠非常自然地理解這個學科。不同經濟體的運作方式，企業的經營方式，人們運行整個國家經濟的方式，所有這些都讓我著迷。

How do you feel about ending high school and heading to college?

你對即將結束高中生涯去上大學有什么想法？

Actually, I’ve been talking about this a lot with my friends recently. I am quite nostalgic and it’s a little sad that to leave SAS and not have them around, but I will work hard towards keeping those connections. On the other hand, it is also quite exciting, because while the end is drawing near it’s also a new beginning. College is new. As is learning in America. Away from my parents, and my home. The beginning of another chapter of my life.

事實上，我最近一直在跟我的朋友談論這一點。我非常懷舊，離開上海美國學校，離開自己的朋友讓我感到有些傷感，但我將努力保持這些聯系。另一方面，這同樣讓人感到非常激動，因為隨著高中生涯的結束，大學生涯即將開始。大學是一種全新的生活。前往美國學習，遠離父母，遠離自己的家，所有這些都是全新的體驗。這是我生活的又一個新篇章。
