What aspects of Huizhou do you know?
Huizhou-style buildings with a white walls and traditional roof-tiles? Or farmlands and manors surrounded by green water?
Poetic and picturesque images of wooden bamboos? Or the smoke curling up from the kitchen chimneys?
Have you ever climbed the rocky peaks of Yellow Mountain overlooking the beautiful and prosperous land of Huizhou?

Huizhou is not just a destination on a map, it also encompasses a rich cultural idea. On April 15, 2019, the eighth-grade students of THIS embarked on a journey of cultural exploration to explore this ancient city.

In Yellow Mountain, the students really experienced the magic of nature. On the way there, they saw the forest on peak of Mount Songshi, which they already read about in their Chinese textbook. Although they were not lucky enough to see the sea of clouds, they witnessed the elegant landscape that looked just like the brushstrokes that flow to form a Chinese ink painting. With cameras and their hearts, the students truly felt and understood the rich meaning of the saying “No mountain is ever comparable to the glory of Yellow Mountain.”

Another unforgettable sight was the lush bamboo forest. The students walked the wet forest path after the spring rain to the small courtyard at the end, hidden in the depths of the bamboo forest. It was like a paradise of peace and tranquility.

"Red lanterns hang from whitewashed wall and grey tiled roofs,
The clear stream is reflecting the image of the stone bridge.
Roofs of courtyard dwellings gather water and bring fortune to the people,
Rich soil cultivates the HuiZhou culture."
This poem was written by G8 student Cynthia Zhou after visiting Hong Village. Within the village, the students visited South Lake Academy and local houses. They felt the charm of the Huizhou architecture, which looked like a part of a painting, and experienced the long-standing Huizhou culture, especially the Huizhou traditional pink and black tiles.

In addition to visiting the natural landscapes, the students also watched the performance of "Huiyun", a touching love story of Dongyong Seven Fairy Bridges that showcased Huizhou’s entrepreneurship, the beauty of Huangshan, and the formation and development of Peking Opera – indeed, Peking Opera originally stemmed from these local performances.
In addition to the appreciation of the beauty of Huizhou, the students also gained hands-on experience. They learned the art of bamboo carving with the wind blowing from the bamboo forest, saw Huizhou’s ink culture in Hu Kaiwen's ink field, made a writing brush in Yangwen’s personal workshop, cultivated the land, grew and picked tea, and watched traditional tea ceremony and tea-making in a tea garden. This is a run on sentence- break into two sentences.

The most heartwarming part of the trip was the social activities with local primary schools. As a tradition of the annual Yellow Mountain trip, the students visited an elementary school called Pearl Heart. There, they had two classes with their G6 students and donated books to the school. In the math class, the local teacher introduced the history of Huizhou abacus culture and their primary school’s unique experience with the abacus. After that, the teacher asked the local students in the class to show their abacus skills. THIS students were very impressed at their speed, which can even be faster than calculators. The other lesson was taught by our English teacher Mr. Stoltz. The class asked our students to help the local students create a "friendship poem" together. Everyone was enthusiastic and eager to help in the activities. THIS students also helped translate some English words to local students and created a cute little poem together. After the classes were finished, students exchanged books they brought from home. THIS students prepared their favorite books for the local studetns, which made the them very excited. Several other students also took the chance to share the content of their book with them. In this activity, THIS students were polite, performed very well, and had a lot of fun in the process.

HuiZhou is a special and pleasant place with amazing people and a rich culture. With this cultural exploration of the Yellow Mountain, the students have gained a deeper understanding of the geographic knowledge of the rivers and mountains of Huizhou along with its literature and history. They also developed a closer sense of connection with the Chinese culture. Through this trip, the THIS students showcased their roots in Chinese culture and demonstrated their abilities as well-rounded people who are set for the international stage, embodying the core values of THIS.
