Each fall, recent graduates from Shanghai American School head off to their chosen college or university for the first time. Schools such as SAS tend to talk a lot about “outcomes.” For most people, the term refers to where students are going. Truth be told, although we celebrate that achievement, we believe this definition of “outcomes” is far too narrow.

每年秋天，都是那些剛剛從上海美國學校畢業的學生們第一次去往自己選擇的學院或學校學習的時節。包括上海美國學校在內的很多學校都會談論“結果”。對于大多數人來說，這個詞指的是學生即將前往就讀的學院或大學。但說實話，我們在慶祝這一成就的同時，也認為對“結果”的這個定義太狹隘了。

The fact is, when we watched the SAS Class of 2019 walk off the graduation stage this past spring, we knew they were carrying far more than a diploma or their array of college acceptances. They were carrying with them the zeal to be lifelong learners, ever seeking new knowledge and skills; they were carrying with them memories of challenges and opportunities that compelled them to live with integrity and compassion; and they were carrying with them the confidence that comes with having moved beyond their comfort zones to lend substance to their dreams.

事實上，當看到2019屆畢業生從畢業典禮的舞臺上走下來時，我們知道他們獲得的不僅僅是文憑或大學錄取通知；他們懷揣著成為終身學習者并追求知識和技能的熱情；他們用自己充滿挑戰和機遇的經歷，回報給社會以誠信和善意；他們還有著走出舒適區去實現自己夢想的自信心。

We know our graduates are ready for college this fall, because they are ready for life.
