10月26日至11月1日, 常熟UWC401名中外師生前往河南(商城、息縣、臺(tái)前、范縣、汝陽、伊川、桐柏、上蔡、新蔡、平輿、泌陽)和安徽(蕭縣、泗縣、金寨、岳西)兩省共15所思源實(shí)驗(yàn)學(xué)校開展文化交流活動(dòng)。這是常熟UWC第四年前往各地思源學(xué)校進(jìn)行文化交流。對(duì)于常熟UWC師生和思源學(xué)校的師生,這是又一次充滿驚喜與收獲的行程,又一段值得永遠(yuǎn)珍藏在心底的回憶。
本期分享的是一位與同學(xué)們一起前往河南信陽市息縣思源學(xué)校的來自英國的老師Su Yin Chan(陳素茵)對(duì)思源師生發(fā)自內(nèi)心的感激之情。Su Yin是我校的英語老師。這是Su Yin第一次來到中國任教,也是第一次走進(jìn)中國的縣城。
My name is Su Yin Chan. My father is from New Territories, Hong Kong, but my mother is half-Chinese from Jamaica, and that is where I was born before moving to the UK at the age of three. I grew up in North Wales and then moved to London. I taughtEnglish in the public sector in the city centre. Back in 2005 and 2007, Ijoineda teacher delegation to exchange experiences of education in China, and I was lucky enough to visit Beijing for a week each time, mainly teaching in a school. Having promised my father to learn the language, I am now fulfilling that promise here at UWC Changshu, China, and loving being here.
我是陳素茵。我父親來自香港新界,我母親來自牙買加,有一半華裔血統(tǒng)。我出生在牙買加,三歲去了英國。我在北威爾士長(zhǎng)大,后來去了倫敦上大學(xué)。畢業(yè)后我在倫敦中心的一所公立學(xué)校教英文。2005-2007期間,我分別兩次參加英國的教師團(tuán)到北京的學(xué)校進(jìn)行一周的教學(xué)。我一直答應(yīng)我父親要學(xué)習(xí)中文,現(xiàn)在在常熟UWC我正努力學(xué)習(xí)中文,我非常喜歡常熟。
I was so excited to be going to Xixian to visit Siyuanschool and see something of the Chinese countryside and the real China. What I discovered is that like a lot of places near Changshu, there are many, many towering buildings and urban sprawl on the way and around Xixian. The land seemed very flat and fertile, and surprisingly empty of people en route, and when we arrived, very similar to Changshu.
我很高興能去河南息縣的學(xué)校,看看中國鄉(xiāng)村和真正的中國。我發(fā)現(xiàn),就像常熟附近的很多地方一樣,在去息縣的路途中和息縣的四周,都有許多高聳的建筑和城區(qū)的不斷擴(kuò)展蔓延。這片土地看起來非常平坦和肥沃,一路上看不到太多人。當(dāng)我們到達(dá)時(shí),我感覺那里與常熟也非常相似。

Head teacher Liu of Siyuan school went out of his way to look after us all, and one of the highlights of that Sunday was visiting the farm seeing all the beautiful vegetables growing. We also got to visit the re-constructed memorial hall of a well known beauty Madam Xi in ancient China in the beautiful sunshine, and hear her story. Some students got to visit students’ homes and were overwhelmed by the hospitality they received.
思源學(xué)校的劉校長(zhǎng)非常熱情,不遺余力地照顧我們帶隊(duì)的老師和所有學(xué)生。那個(gè)星期天的一大亮點(diǎn)是參觀農(nóng)場(chǎng),看到了農(nóng)田里種植的各種蔬菜。我們還在燦爛的陽光下參觀重建了的春秋時(shí)期四大美女之一的息夫人紀(jì)念館,并聽聽她的故事。一些學(xué)生去做家訪,他們也對(duì)當(dāng)?shù)貙W(xué)生家庭的熱情接待深為感動(dòng)。

The size of schools in China is startling compared to the UK, and the flag-raising ceremony also a new experience. That Monday morning was the coldest we’d encountered, but our reception was so warm, there were smiles all round as we were entertained by wonderful performances given by the Siyuan students, ending up with all of us on stage, treated like popular performers.
與英國相比,中國的學(xué)校之大令人驚嘆,對(duì)我來說升旗儀式也是一種新的體驗(yàn)。那個(gè)星期一的早晨是我們所遇到的最寒冷的早上,但是息縣思源學(xué)校的熱情的歡迎把寒冷驅(qū)散。整個(gè)過程中所有人臉上都滿是笑容,思源學(xué)生的表演非常精彩,最后我們大家都登上舞臺(tái),我們就像演員一樣受到學(xué)生和老師的熱烈歡迎。
Getting to meet the students and interact with them, was the real highlight of the week, especially as we saw the same faces again and again and came to feel really close to them. They were interested in us, and we were interested in them. As a gift, Iwrote a poem that really captures this feeling of interchange. Kimi translated the poem into Chinese. For many of us, we realized that by comparison our lives have been much easier, but their spirit, their willingness to share, and their generosity was humbling.
與學(xué)生見面并與他們互動(dòng)是項(xiàng)目周的真正亮點(diǎn),尤其是當(dāng)我們一次又一次看到相同的面孔并變得與他們非常親近時(shí)。他們對(duì)我們感興趣,我們也對(duì)他們感興趣。作為禮物,我寫了一首詩來表達(dá)我們對(duì)這次交流的感受,阮嘉騏(Kimi) 同學(xué)把詩翻譯成了中文。對(duì)于我們?cè)S多人來說,我們意識(shí)到,與思源學(xué)校的學(xué)生相比,我們的生活要輕松得多,但是他們的精神,分享的意愿和慷慨都令我們自嘆不如。

As Mehrdod, a FP student from Tajikistan said, when he saw the amazing talent of the students, how hard they must have worked to give us such a varied performance in the final concert, he was inspired by them to give back. He’s determined that next year, when he’s a DP1, he’ll have some new skill to share. Apart from the new friendships that formed within our group of students, many of us felt that although we knew from their reaction that we’d touched the young students of Siyuan – from the beautiful flowers, fruit and sweets we’d been given – they had touched us. Seeing how other people live, and getting to spend time with them, and then reflecting on this experience has been really important for UWC students too: it was a shared experience that benefited and inspired so many people.
正如來自塔吉克斯坦的FP學(xué)生Mehrdod所說,當(dāng)他看到思源的學(xué)生們?cè)谖覀兣R行前的聯(lián)歡會(huì)上的精彩文藝表演上所展現(xiàn)的才華和付出的努力時(shí),他深受感染并決心回饋。他準(zhǔn)備明年當(dāng)他成為DP1時(shí),將學(xué)會(huì)一些新技能與思源學(xué)生分享。除了與學(xué)生建立了新的友誼,我們中的許多人都感到,我們與思源學(xué)生的交流打動(dòng)了他們,我們收到了許多禮物,美麗的花朵,水果和糖果,思源的學(xué)生也感動(dòng)了我們。看到其他人的生活,與他們共度時(shí)光,然后反思這種經(jīng)歷,對(duì)UWC學(xué)生也非常重要:這是一種共享的經(jīng)歷,令學(xué)生受益并深受啟發(fā)。
