回顧2019，小助手為大家帶來了一系列寫作類干貨文章，其中，Narrative Writing（敘事性寫作）系列向大家詳細介紹了該文體在申請階段和美國大學中的運用與重要性，如何寫好Narrative Essay，以及Narrative Essay必備的幾大基本要素。在2020的開始之際，小助手將為大家帶來Argumentative Essay（議論文）寫作系列。如果說寫好Narrative Essay是申請階段同學們的攔路虎，那么Argumentative Essay（議論文）就會是同學們在進入美國大學后遇到的第一大難題。議論文在大學階段占據了Paper文體的半壁江山。

Argumentative Essay

議論文

議論文是英語寫作中常見的一種文體，美國大學的議論文側重于論述觀點，還有說服的目的，文章都要求有嚴謹的格式，論據大多都是引用的文獻數據或者自己的研究數據，文章不需要華麗的辭藻，而在于嚴謹有力。Argue一個論點聽上去不難，有理有據的闡明并論證觀點即可，但同學們往往會卡在第一步，How to develop a clear thesis statement.

Thesis

Thesis指的是文章的論題，也就是要論證的話題。通常，一篇文章的thesis是通過thesis statement（中心論點）來體現的。要想形成一個優秀的論題（develop thesis），寫好Thesis Statement是第一步。那么，為什么Thesis Statement如此重要呢？

A thesis statement conveys to the reader the points and/or arguments you wish to make in a paper. It serves as a road map that forecasts what the essay is going to be about and the direction of your argument or analysis, and how you will interpret the importance of the subject. It also helps the writer organize his or her writing.

由上方可見，清晰的中心論點可以在開頭段就為讀者闡明在這篇文章中作者的觀點以及作者將如何就這個觀點發展他的論述。因此，一個清晰的中心論點不僅幫助作者寫作的時候不離題，也為讀者提供了一個清晰的關于作者要說什么的預覽。

Argument

除了寫好Thesis Statement以外，要想進一步發展自己的論題，根據中心論點發散出幾個分論點making an argument）也很重要。

如上方引用所說，分論點的主要目的是服務于中心論點，幫助說服讀者接受作者的觀點，因此，這是一種 “persuasive writing”, 即具有說服性的寫作。想要文章有說服性，就不得不提到Evidence （論據）了。

Evidence

The audience?will?only believe what the writer or the speaker has to say if he proffers strong?evidence?to back up his arguments. Therefore,?evidence?not only helps the writer convince his readers but also persuades them to feel sympathy or to support his?argument.

論據在文章中起到支撐，加固論點的作用。常見的Evidence包括數據（Data）事實（Facts）例子（Examples）或個人經歷（Experience）等。關于如何尋找并運用合適的論據為文章添彩，同學們可以關注之后幾期的議論文系列文章。
