As middle and elementary students congregated in the open space of Hengshan Assembly on March 8 at Shanghai American School’s Puxi campus library (affectionately known as The Hub), there was something magical about the energy. “Find a seat on the carpet,” they were told. And unlike with so many other audiences who cautiously fill a room starting at the rear, these students rushed excitedly to the very front.

It was the opening ceremony for the 2019 Battle of the Books. The 250 students present had gathered from nine international schools around Shanghai, and were decked out in team shirts and costumes, ready for a day of celebrating books and reading. Marcel Gauthier, Head of School at SAS, told stories of discovering the library as a child, of loving books and the worlds they opened.
這是2019年“Battle of the Books”(圖書戰(zhàn)爭)的開幕式。

Award-winning SAS Visiting Author Laurel Snyder spoke to this rapt audience of passionate young readers about her story, her process, and what it means to be a writer and a reader. Students wanted insider information on her book “Orphan Island” and about what’s next in her upcoming sequel.

The “battles” that day varied wildly, from book trivia to book-themed cake designing, and amidst the friendly competition, kids geeked out over books. Readers found each other (and also a lot of frosting) and as Laurel Snyder signed books and chatted with fans, her stories encouraged the reader and storyteller in each of us.

All this seemed like the right moment to officially do a little ribbon-cutting and celebrate the opening of The Hub, an incredible space our secondary students have started learning, gathering, and collaborating in this year. This redesigned building will certainly become the center of many more celebrations and connections for the SAS community in the future.
